What to do in Ronda
in a weekend.

Two days paced calmly, no stress. The essentials, told by people who know the city inside out.

Ronda doesn't need a week. With two well-paced days you take the city with you. Here's what we'd recommend to friends coming to visit.

01

The old town

Day 1 · No rush, no queues

Morning + afternoon ~8 h with breaks All on foot

Start at the Puente Nuevo first thing in the morning, before the bulk of tourists arrive. The early light falls onto the Tajo gorge and that's when you best appreciate the cut in the rock. Cross to the old quarter and walk down the gorge path to the intermediate viewpoints.

The New Bridge at sunrise. If you arrive before 9, you'll almost have it to yourself.

Then head to the Bullring. It's the oldest in Spain (1785) and you can visit it inside, together with the bullfighting museum. Even if bullfighting isn't your thing, the building itself is worth it: the architecture, the ring, the sand.

In the afternoon, walk down to the Arab Baths in the lower part of the city. They are the best-preserved on the peninsula and, in the middle of summer, a great excuse to cool off out of the sun for a while.

If you only climb up to the New Bridge for the photo, you've only seen half of Ronda. You have to go down. — Fernando's tip

Nature and wine

Day 2 · Open air and bodegas

Full day Outside town Book ahead

In the morning, one of two: walk the Tajo trail (the water route, starting from the bridge and going down to the bottom of the canyon) or, if you prefer a slower pace, rent bikes for a ride around the outskirts. The views are different and both are worth it.

For lunch, eat at a restaurant with views. Tropicana has a spectacular terrace right opposite the Tajo. Book ahead, especially in high season.

In the afternoon, visit a winery. Ronda is part of the Sierras de Málaga D.O. and has a dozen small wineries making very decent wines. Three safe bets:

— If you have an extra day

Day trip to the white villages

Use it to escape to one of the nearby villages. Setenil de las Bodegas is the most striking; Grazalema, the most "mountain" one. Either will charm you.
